Programme Details

This occupation is found in virtually every industry and the apprenticeship is aimed at individuals that are new to the role of management. A Team leader or supervisor is a first line management role, with operational and project responsibilities or responsibility for managing a team to deliver a clearly defined outcome. They provide direction, instructions and guidance to ensure the achievement of set goals. Working in the private, public or third sector and in all sizes of organisation, specific responsibilities will vary, but the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed will be the same whatever the role.

Key responsibilities are likely to include supporting, managing and developing team members, managing projects, planning and monitoring workloads and resources, delivering operational plans, resolving problems, and building relationships internally and externally.

Training Delivery

Your apprentice will have this apprenticeship delivered through monthly tutor led workshops, self-directed online learning modules on our bespoke learning platform OLLIE and informal 1:1 sessions.
All apprentices will be provided with a structured learning plan including their 12 weekly progress reviews.

Entry Requirements

Your learner must be exposed to relevant work experience in their current role to be able to meet the standards of the apprenticeship. We require all candidates to achieve Level 2 maths and English by the end of this programme.

For those who do not already hold and have evidence of Maths or English at grade C/4 or equivalent, they will be required to take an online initial assessment to determine whether they are eligible to be enrolled on programme.

Apprenticeship Details

The course content includes a range of topics which make up the variety of knowledge, skills and behaviours of what makes for a highly competent and professional Transport Operations Supervisor.

The training delivery will cover a range of topics, including, but not limited to the following:

SP Training

Interpersonal excellence – managing people and developing relationships

  • Leading people: Understand different leadership styles and the benefits of coaching to support people and improve performance. Understand organisational cultures, equality, diversity and inclusion.
  • Managing people: Understand people and team management models, including team dynamics and motivation techniques. Understand HR systems and legal requirements, and performance management techniques including setting goals and objectives, conducting appraisals, reviewing performance, absence management, providing constructive feedback, and recognising achievement and good behaviour.
  • Building relationships: Understand approaches to customer and stakeholder relationship management, including emotional intelligence and managing conflict. Know how to facilitate cross team working to support delivery of organisational objectives.
  • Communication: Understand different forms of communication and their application. Know how to chair meetings, hold challenging conversations, provide constructive feedback and understand how to raise concerns.
SP Training Project Management

Organisational performance – delivering results

  • Operational management: Understand how organisational strategy is developed. Know how to implement operational and team plans and manage resources and approaches to managing change within the team. Understand data management, and the use of different technologies in business.
  • Project management: Understand the project lifecycle and roles. Know how to deliver a project including: managing resources, identifying risks and issues, using relevant project management tools.
  • Finance: Understand organisational governance and compliance, and how to deliver Value for Money. Know how to monitor budgets to ensure efficiencies and that costs do not overrun.

Personal effectiveness – managing self

  • Awareness of self: Know how to be self-aware and understand unconscious bias and inclusivity. Understand learning styles, feedback mechanisms and how to use emotional intelligence
  • Management of self: Understand time management techniques and tools, and how to prioritise activities and approaches to planning
  • Decision making: Understand problem solving and decision making techniques, and how to analyse data to support decision making.

In addition to covering the apprenticeship standards the apprentice will also be required to complete 8 CMI units, in the form of written assignments, to gain their CMI Level 3 Diploma.

  • CMI 311 Contributing to the delivery of a project

  • CMI 312 Managing Daily Activities to Achieve Results
  • CMI 314 Managing Budgets and Resources

The CMI Diploma is fully embedded within the apprenticeship ensuring that all learners have the knowledge to complete the written assignments above.

Learner Journey

The Team Leader Level 3 Apprenticeship typically takes 12 months to complete. The programme includes “on-programme learning” followed by assessment for Gateway. The learner will be provided with a clear scheme of work, which will set out the scheduled Ollie modules, 1-2-1 reviews, practical training dates and face to face workshops. If required, the learner must also complete training towards maths and English qualifications.

End Point Assessment

The EPA is completed in two separate sections.

Assessment method 1: Presentation with questions and answers

Apprentices will prepare and deliver a presentation (followed by questions and answers) based on topic(s) covered within the apprenticeship. The presentation and questions will last 50 minutes plus 10% (at the discretion of the independent assessor) if required. The presentation will typically last for 20 minutes and the questioning will typically last for 30 minutes in order to provide scope for the apprentice to demonstrate their full competence.

Assessment method 2: Professional discussion underpinned by portfolio of evidence

This assessment will take the form of a professional discussion which must be appropriately structured to draw out the best of the apprentice’s competence and excellence and cover the KSBs assigned to this assessment method. Questioning should assess the KSBs assigned to this assessment method and the apprentice may use their portfolio to support their responses. The professional discussion will last 60 minutes. The independent assessor has the discretion to increase the time of the professional discussion by up to 10% to allow the apprentice to complete their last answer.
