Programme Details

This occupation is found in: National and international transport and logistic organisation’s in a very wide range of sectors. Employers range from large organisation’s with their own in-house operations through to specialist contractors through to small businesses.

The broad purpose of the occupation is to drive large goods vehicles, which are vehicles with a Gross Combined Weight of over 7500kg and include Articulated and Draw Bar vehicles, in a safe and fuel-efficient manner, ensuring that the right products are delivered at the right time, location, condition and temperature (if required), with the correct documentation and within the shortest lead times. LGV drivers deliver to a range of settings, such as warehouses, shops and private homes.

The Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (Driver CPC) is a legal requirement for those driving LGV’s professionally. The LGV driver will receive the Driver CPC card as a part of their (C+E )license acquisition, the driver must complete 35 hours of periodic training every five years in order to maintain the ability to drive LGV’s professionally.

An employee in this occupation will be responsible for maintaining the integrity of the load and vehicle by applying correct procedures for load restraint, performance and conduct on the road, fuel efficient driving, vehicle defect checks, complying with all traffic legislation, working time and high way code rules whilst delivering first class customer service at all times.

Training Delivery

Your apprentice will have this apprenticeship delivered through self-directed online learning modules on our bespoke learning platform OLLIE and face to face practical training with one of our P Driver Trainers.

All apprentices will be provided with a structured learning plan including their 12 weekly progress reviews.

Entry Requirements

Your learner must be exposed to relevant work experience in their current role to be able to meet the standards of the apprenticeship. We require all candidates to achieve Level 2 maths and English by the end of this programme.

For those who do not already hold and have evidence of Maths or English at grade C/4 or equivalent, they will be required to take an online initial assessment to determine whether they are eligible to be enrolled on programme.

Apprenticeship Details

Month 1 and 2 Apprentices will complete all pre-learning to enable them to sit their DVLA theory test

Month 2 and 3 Apprentices will complete E-Learning activities on our bespoke interactive online platform (Ollie) 10 modules covering Personal and Professional Development. By the end of month 3 all learners will have completed their theory and will have practical training dates provided
Month 3 and 4 Learners will complete practical training Apprentices will all complete 10 sessions with one of the SP Training driver trainers.
The practical driving test will be booked and sat before month 6
Months 4 to 7 Apprentices will complete Buddying Activities within the workplace and record on Ollie Activities include:

  • Vehicle Checks
  • Safe and Fuel-Efficient Driving
  • Customer Service
  • Use of Technology
  • Route Planning
  • Accident Reporting
  • Health and Wellbeing
  • Driving Hours and Tachograph Law
From month 6 onwards the Apprentice will attend 5 Professional Driver workshops delivered by SP Driver Trainers.

These will include:

  • Driver Safety at Work
  • Driving hours and Record Keeping
  • Safe and Fuel-Efficient Driving
  • Vulnerable Road Users
  • Vehicle Checks and Enforcement
Month 8 Apprentices will complete E-Learning activities on our bespoke interactive online platform (Ollie) Modules include: Career Development, The Transport Industry and Individual Employer Structure
Months 9 to 11 Apprentices will complete knowledge checks and learning activities on Ollie These activities are designed to ensure your apprentice has the knowledge embedded to pass the multiple choice element of the End Point Assessment
Month 12 Scheduled meeting with Learning Advisor, Apprentice and Employer to submit the apprentice through Gateway

Learner Journey

The Large Goods Vehicle Apprenticeship typically takes 12 months to complete. The programme includes “on-programme learning” followed by assessment for Gateway. The learner will be provided with a clear scheme of work, which will set out the scheduled Ollie modules, 1-2-1 reviews, practical training dates and face to face workshops. If required, the learner must also complete training towards maths and English qualifications.

End Point Assessment

Multiple-choice test

The apprentice will complete a multiple-choice test. It will be closed book, meaning you will not have access to any books or reference materials.

Practical assessment with questions

The apprentice will be observed by an independent assessor completing a set of tasks. It will last 1 hour. They will be asked at least 3 open questions.

Interview underpinned by a portfolio of evidence

The apprentice will have an interview with an independent assessor. It will last at least 60 minutes. They will ask at least 9 questions. The questions will be about certain aspects of the occupation. The apprentice will need to compile a portfolio of evidence before the EPA gateway.
