LGV Skills Bootcamps
Skills Bootcamps are designed to quickly train individuals to become road-ready HGV drivers to address the UK’s driver shortage. These bootcamps are part of the government’s initiative to provide lifelong skills to individuals and enhance their employment opportunities. The training is intensive and comprehensive, covering all aspects from obtaining a provisional licence to passing the necessary driving tests. The bootcamps are free for eligible participants and aim to boost the workforce by offering a pathway to a lucrative and essential career in logistics and transportation.
Who are Eligible Participants?
Fully Funded Referral
This is the main route into a Skills Bootcamp. As a training provider, we work closely with employers looking to recruit newly qualified drivers. We interview potential candidates on behalf of these employers and then train the selected individuals to fill new roles within the employer’s business.
Due to extremely high demand, there is currently a large waiting list, and we are not accepting new applications.
Co-funded
Employers upskilling their current workforce. We also work directly with a range of employers who are upskilling their current workforce. These employers must contribute to the cost of their employees’ training, with the contribution size depending on the number of employees in the company:
- Under 250 employees: 10% contribution
- Over 250 employees: 30% contribution
Applications from Individuals
You may apply as an individual, but there are strict eligibility guidelines.
3A: You are currently employed but wish to leave your employer and start a new job role upon completing the training.
3B: You are currently unemployed and want to use the training as a gateway to a new job.
If either 3A or 3B applies to you, then you will be classed as a Fully Funded Referral (as option 1 above). This means that you must have an offer of a new job role relevant to the course you are applying for before completing an application.
Why must I have an offer of a new job role?
The training provider takes on the financial responsibility of training candidates and claims back the cost through the available funding in a series of milestone payments. Up to 50% of the funding is dependent upon:
(i) Evidence of a job interview.
(ii) Successful job outcome.
Therefore, there is a risk that the training provider will incur a significant loss if both of the above are not in place before the commencement of training.
3C: You are employed and wish to stay with your current employer but move to a new job role upon completing the training. This is classed as a Co-funded. You are approaching us rather than your employer, but they will be required to contribute to your training. During the application process, you will need to provide the contact details of the person responsible for authorising the necessary payment, which must be made before you start the programme. It is important to discuss this with your employer.
3D: You are self-employed as a sole trader or in a partnership. You are eligible to apply for fully funded training, but you must meet the following criteria:
(i) Your business is in a field that would directly benefit from acquiring an LGV/HGV licence.
(ii) You can justify the tangible benefits an LGV/HGV licence will bring to your business. You will be asked to attest to this upon completing the training.
3E: Limited companies – as above, but one of our admin team will assess your application and discuss the funding options with you.
